Pet Portraits

You adore your pet, but have you ever considered that they are a mirror of you? This is a Jungian concept that I have given a lot of thought to, as I have spent hours painting my dog, Pebbles, and inserting her into my paintings in humorous (sometimes darkly humorous) and playful ways. As I went through my own shadow exploration and individuation with the help of my paintings and a really great Jungian therapist, it became apparent to me, that Pebbles was showing me some of my own shadows, in the form of aspects of my own personality that I wasn't seeing. Some of these are very positive aspects that we have hidden from ourselves for various reasons - what Jung would call, the "gold" in the shadow. For example, I saw the playfulness as an aspect of my own inner child's need to explore and enjoy life. The guardedness, as a reflection of my own fear of getting to close to people, or defensiveness.
